Still, bootleg DVDs -- slickly produced and packaged, some with "extras" even better than those found on legitimate discs -- remain a huge business and give an indication of the scale of the problem: According to a report in state-run media, the country's pirate DVD industry raked in $6 billion in 2010. By comparison, China's box-office receipts totaled $1.5 billion last year. But thereЎЇs going to be another interesting story hiding in todayЎЇs earnings, one that barely gets any attention anymore. Around 7 million customers still pay Netflix to send them DVDs of movies and TV shows via mail. Two years ago, that number was twice as high. Fast-forward another two years, and there could be around 4 million customers left who get their red envelopes from Netflix. Or maybe even less.

In an ideal world, Netflix could just scale down its DVD operations the same way it scaled them up, and continue to make at least some money until the last customerЎЇs DVD player finally breaks. Realistically, the company is going to hit a few bumps in the road. The Hollywood trade group believes China will only get serious about piracy when its homegrown industry demands action.

The next generation beyond DVD technology is high-definition, or HD, technology. As television systems switched over to digital signaling, high-definition television (HDTV) became available, featuring much greater picture resolution than traditional television. Motion pictures are especially suited for display on wide flat-panel HDTV screens, and in 2002, as in 1994ЁC95, two competing (and incompatible) technologies were presented for storing video in high-definition on a CD-ROM-sized disc: HD DVD, proposed by Toshiba and the NEC Corporation, and Blu-ray, proposed by a group led by Sony. Both technologies employed a laser emitting light in the blue-violet end of the visible spectrum. The extremely short wavelength of this light (405 nanometres) allowed yet smaller pits to be traced on even more closely spaced tracks than on the DVD. As a result, a single-sided. single-layer disc had a storage capacity of 15 gigabytes (HD DVD) or 25 gigabytes (Blu-ray).
